Mercedes Schlapp has no easy task in her position in the role of White House adviser for strategic communication. She must contend with a president who serves as his own communication director, multiple legal battles that can throw off the White House's strategy for messaging and a number of Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own controversy. Schlapp is able to keep her eye on the ball all the time, working in close collaboration with White House policy and political teams, as well as legislative affairs team and shops. The first few months, Schlapp has focused on school safety concerns, addiction issues, infrastructure and international trade. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters frequently in her current job. The attention she attracted in March was when she was named one of the contenders to succeed Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a straightforward job as White House strategic communication adviser. The White House's strategic communications adviser must deal various legal battles that may affect the communications strategy of the administration, along with Cabinet secretaries that are embroiled in scandals of their own. However, throughout it all Schlapp is determined to focus on her task that she has been assigned, and is working closely with the White House's policy and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as well in the communications department to coordinate policy rollouts. Her focus to date has been issues such as school safety, the opioid epidemic, trade, infrastructure as well as other topics. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters much in her current role. It was in March that she received a flurry of interest, after it was it was reported that she would be a potential candidate to fill Hope Hicks's position as the director of communications. It was a tense battle. The allies of Schlapp as well as Tony Sayegh who is another candidate for the position started fighting in the media. Schlapp stated to the Washington Examiner that she spoke with Sayegh about a recent negative article concerning him.
